A Guide to Visiting Hatta, Dubai

Around 90 minutes from Downtown Dubai, Hatta offers a completely different side to the emirate. Surrounded by the Hajar Mountains near the Oman border, this mountain town is known for its rugged landscapes, outdoor adventures and cooler climate. Once a quiet farming community, it has become one of Dubai's most popular destinations for hiking, kayaking and weekend escapes.

Over the past few years, Hatta has developed into a destination in its own right, with a growing collection of outdoor experiences, mountain stays and attractions that showcase the region’s natural landscape. Whether you are visiting for the day or planning a longer stay, there is plenty to discover beyond the city.

Hatta Dam

Constructed in the 1990s to provide the region with electricity and water, Hatta Dam has evolved into one of the area's most recognisable landmarks. The reservoir is contained by a large concrete wall and surrounded by the rugged peaks of the Hajar Mountains. It is particularly known for its vibrant turquoise waters, which contrast with the surrounding arid terrain.

Visitors come to the dam for kayaking, canoeing and pedal boating, with rental facilities available on site. A large mural honouring the UAE's founding fathers overlooks the reservoir, while walking trails and viewpoints around the perimeter provide opportunities for photography and sightseeing. Although swimming is prohibited, the dam remains one of Hatta's most popular destinations for outdoor recreation.

JA Hatta Fort Hotel

Established in 1981, JA Hatta Fort Hotel is Hatta's longest-standing mountain resort, set across 80 acres of landscaped gardens and natural terrain. Its distinctive stone buildings and sloping roofs complement the surrounding Hajar Mountains, while its 79 rooms, cabins and villas offer a base for exploring the region.

Guests have access to two temperature-controlled swimming pools, a mini-golf course, archery and air-rifle shooting. Dining options include Jeema and Café Gazebo, both long-established favourites among visitors. Today, it remains the only full-service luxury hotel within Hatta itself.

Caravan Hatta by Our Habitas

Opened in December 2025, Caravan Hatta by Our Habitas marks the hospitality brand's first property in the UAE. The sustainable retreat features 50 bespoke Airstream-style trailers set within a valley overlooking Hatta Dam, combining low-impact design with modern comforts, including private timber decks, air conditioning and ensuite bathrooms.

At the heart of the retreat is the Lake House, home to an infinity pool, observatory deck and Madar, an open-air restaurant serving regional cuisine and live barbecue. Guests also have direct access to the hiking and cycling trails of Hatta Wadi Hub, alongside wellness facilities including a barrel sauna and outdoor plunge pools.

Hatta Sign

Perched 450 metres above sea level in the Hajar Mountains, the Hatta Sign has become one of the town's most recognisable landmarks. Reached via a steep 7-kilometre hiking trail from Hatta Wadi Hub, the moderate to difficult climb takes around 30 to 45 minutes and rewards visitors with sweeping views across Hatta Dam, the surrounding mountains and the Oman border.

The sign held the Guinness World Record for the World's Tallest Landmark Sign after reaching 19.28 metres in 2023, before being surpassed by the Liwa Sign in Abu Dhabi the following year. Illuminated after dark, it continues to dominate Hatta's skyline and remains one of the area's most photographed viewpoints.
